Hi all! There are so many technology skills I could want to learn, but specifically I want to learn imovie. I say this because I have tried to use it so many times and always found it difficult, so i'd definitely need to learn it. I think imovie is a great tool for making your own videos, making picture slideshows, compiling different subjects into a movie, etc. I think I can do this by really sitting down to learn the system and looking up tutorials on youtube. Not only is imovie good for education, it's also good for making personal movies, etc. I had an optional extra credit in a class and you could make an imovie, but I didn't have the time to learn it so I had to miss out. I hope I can learn this tool in the near future!

HOW are we almost done?! Hi guys welcome back to my blog :)

I have huge plans as an aspiring teacher for technology! I think even if you're one of those people who hate how much technology is taking over, it's kind of inevitable at this point and a good teacher will familiarize their students with technology because of how relevant it is. I plan to use technology to communicate with parents (through email) and possibly a class page, because I know some students don't keep their parents up to speed the way they'd like to. I also will post reminders/class announcements on a student page of my class page incase a student ever feels overwhelmed, it can be a point of reference. Lastly, I will routinely incorporate technology in my lessons, using interactive slideshows, the internet, webquests, etc.

The first powerpoint assignment didn't really teach me much but the second one taught me all new tools and it was awesome! I've honestly always wondered how people create interactive slideshows, (clicking on arrows and being brought to the next slide, rather than just hitting the space bar or clicking the mouse) i've worked on powerpoint a lot and never figured it out. There wasn't much I didn't like about the assignment because I learned new helpful skills. I think in the future now that i'm more familiar, it won't take so long. I attached it below.

Hi again everyone!
I think the flipped classroom is a really cool idea and gets away from the traditional approaches of learning that sometimes become boring to students. However, for those students who aren't as good at working at home for school, the flipped classroom approach definitely won't work as good for them. In simple explanation, the flipped classroom idea is when students watch a video watch short simple videos on the lecture prior to class so that during class time the teacher can expand on the information, answer questions, etc. Like I mentioned, it requires at home effort on the students part so that's a necessity for it to work out. For students who get bored/distracted easily during "boring" lectures, the flipped classroom is a great approach.
I think the digital divide is a huge issue. The digital divide is caused by differences in wealth between families and schools. I think in schools where most kids are privileged enough to have technology and a small amount are not, the digital divide becomes a distraction and a problem. If a student doesn't have a computer at home and has to go to a public library and use one, they're already putting in more work and are more inconvenienced than those kids who don't have to leave home. As a teacher, I would send home a sheet with each student at the beginning of the year to see what technology they have access to and assess the situation from there. I would also try to make sure technology that is provided by the school can be present in my classroom so if kids don't have those devices at home they can get used to them at school.
I loved the powerpoint assignments. The first was very easy and the second caused me a bit more trouble. However, like most of the assignments, it's cool bringing projects to life and seeing how I really could use them in the future. I didn't know how to make an interactive powerpoint but with a little help from the internet I figured things out.

Hi everyone! Whew that powerpoint project had me veryyyyy busy.

I've worked with disabled kids every summer at a camp so I appreciate assistive and adaptive technologies so much. I think it helps disabled students feel so much more capable and not be so secluded from other students. I think sometimes these technologies can be pretty time consuming which can cause some issues in a classroom but I think the benefits are worth using them. I've seen kids with learning disabilities be provided ipads with the lesson plans on the screen with interactive touching features because touching tangible items can help them learn better.

Honestly, the more I know about technology I think the better I will be professionally. Technology is so important these days and I feel like i'm getting very familiar with programs I never knew before. Creating websites, presentations, resumes, etc. are all things i'm sure i'll have to do no matter what job I have and knowing the skills makes it so much easier to just focus on the content.

I LOVED the webquest assignment. I'll agree it was pretty time-consuming, but I loved getting to be creative with the site. I'm sure i'll make a website in the future whether it be a blog, for a business, etc. I learned how to properly format a website, to leave little white space, to adjust it for my classes age group, etc. Here it is! https://kls16c.wixsite.com/dailyeatsproject

Hi everyone! Happy 4th of July! So crazy that it's already July and the semester is flying by!

I actually found a great set of teacher pages for Franklin Public School. It's grades 9-12. (https://sites.google.com/a/franklin.k12.wi.us/hs-barry/) This is Mrs. Barry's website and I think it gives just the right amount of information to the public. I find a photograph of her, the grade and subject she teaches and contact information. There's a little section where she introduces her class and subject and then the scheduling for her class. There's also a little for her classes turnitin.com instructions. If I ever had to make a teacher page I think one like Mrs. Barry's would be perfect. Look at it below!

I like blogging! I like talking to the class and mostly it's only once a week so I don't think it's too excessive. To be quite honest some of the assignments in the class get confusing to me but blogging on blogger.com is pretty straight forward. I like getting to know more about my classmates and especially like finding blogs where my classmates let their personalities come out a little bit more. I'd like to learn more on making my blog look nice and cool effects and maybe i'll learn more about that soon!

Lastly, here is my web evaluation form from last week! I actually enjoyed this assignment because I felt like I really created a helpful form that's similar to something i'd have to do if I really was a teacher. It was also have to fill it out myself and see it all come to life. I learned a lot on formatting because I wanted the form to be very easy to understand and remain visually appealing. I think in the future if I was working with older kids I would go more in depth on the form but this one did the job for my younger audience.

Hi Everyone! Happy half-way point!

There are a lot of cool academic software tools. I will definitely continue to use microsoft word because I think it's so diverse and there are so many things you can do with it. From making charts, to taking notes, to writing papers, to creating resumes, I think word can do it all. I'll encourage my students to explore all of the things they can do with word. I'll also use TopHat. I got introduced to TopHat in college. It's an app that can be used on a phone or computer that runs during the class and has students answer questions on the lesson the teacher has created. I think it's a great way to make sure students are engaged in learning and aren't drifting off.

I love twitter! I've been talking to so many of my classmates and follow a lot of cool education twitter accounts. I've been updated on current events in the education world as well as current events in this class! I think twitter could be used in a classroom to remind students of due dates, or quickly share a message with your whole class. Since social media is so relevant, I really think it'd be cool as a teacher to use twitter as a means of communication.

HAPPY WEEK 5!

I played around a lot on the ELA standards and technology website and looked at various different grade levels but paid most attention to grades 9-10 because I want to teach highschool. There was A LOT of reference to technology, the digital world, and multimedia in the 9-10 grade standards. I think I grasp a lot of the concepts and would be able to teach them, but am afraid I would run into some technical difficulties as of now (thank gosh i'm in this class I guess)! I feel ready to teach vocabulary, word linkage, word meanings, relationships, organizing ideas, topics, etc. I have a lot of practice on connecting ideas well with transitions, specific vocabulary, and creating a good flow in writing. However, there were a lot of standards (as I mentioned) using the internet and digital media with some programs i've never heard of before, so I'd need to learn more about that.

Once again, when looking at the CPALMS toolkits, I looked at the highschool focused resources/tools. One tool I thought was cool and so useful was "Be careful with your comma's!" interactive tutorial. This one grabbed my attention because i'm sure by highschool kids are confident that they know when and where to use a a comma, but yet they frequently misplace them. I would use this resource in my classroom because it's not just a boring video with corny jokes, it's interactive and actually tests if the students are using the comma's correctly. It's not too long and split up into a bunch of modules, where a student can choose to skip if they know that module. In between modules there are practices. Then at the end there are final practices to make sure you can combine all the different ways and rules they taught the student about comma's. You fill in blanks, hit links, etc. and it doesn't leave the student bored!

Lastly for this blog, I attached my newsletter assignment. I actually really liked this assignment because it was such a real life example, it was really like I was creating a newsletter for my future classroom. I learned how to keep the content in two columns even with a header, clipart, and photos. At first everything was misaligned, but I learned how to fix it properly. I think next time I should try to make the second page as aesthetically pleasing as the first. It'll help keep the attention of the person reading the newsletter. I liked the assignment, it tested my knowledge but wasn't too difficult. Have a great week class! Check out my comments on Sierra & Courtney's blog!

ALL OUT IN THE OPEN!

Open terms & Open educational resources

Let me start by saying I enjoyed the podcast because it quickly and easily laid out three terms that are important for this module: open education, open content, and open source.
https://opensource.com/resources/what-open-education  kind of touches on concepts in the podcast and expands. Generally, all of these terms support the philosophy on how people can and should produce, share, and build on knowledge all together. Money, geography, etc. can limit someone's access to knowledge and we should want to break that barrier. We have open sources because we want others to be able to enhance that source and make it even better. This article also talks about online courses that are available to anyone, that simply exist just to help expand the knowledge of those who want to. I think that's really cool, life is about learning.

https://lumenlearning.com/about/whats-oer/ OER'S! OER'S! OER'S! All about Open Educational Resources.“Open Educational Resources are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others. OER include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.” Is how the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation defines OER's. In simpler terms, free resources that can make us more knowledgable!
OER's legally allow students, teachers, and learners to engage in the 5 R's: retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute. These are all ways we can alter or process information we find. OER's save money, are quick, efficient, and the possibilities are endless.

Microsoft Word

Personally, i've seen Microsoft word being used more than any other computer program in the classroom. From flyers, to note writing, essays, etc. My teachers and I have both used Microsoft word a lot. I know there are a lot of really advanced features on Microsoft word but I haven't had much exposure to that yet.

Copyright and plagiarism can be a confusing thing for students. I've had several experiences in school where my fellow students have been accused of copyright and they didn't even realize they were doing it. There's a fine line between plagiarism and summarizing and it's important for students to learn that. I think as a teacher i'd frequently do exercises or presentations on copyright. Students can get harshly punished for this offense and i'd never want a student to get in trouble because I didn't teach them the facts.

Copyright- To avoid copyright being an issue in my classroom i'd do monthly exercises with my students on copyright. I'd provide the students with a few articles and tell them to write a paper on it without copyrighting. I'd ask them to include summaries and direct quotations (so they learn to cite and give credibility) and then make sure they complete the assignment without copyrighting. This practice will make sure they don't do it on a bigger, more important assignment that's not practice.
Academic Honesty- I think academic honesty comes down to the morale of the student him/herself, but to avoid it being an issue I would let the students know of the consequences regularly and enforce them if there was any dishonesty. First offense would be zero on an assignment and second offense they would deal with a higher power than myself, such as the dean.
Cyberbullying- To avoid cyberbullying I would deal with it similarly to academic honesty where students know there will be harsh punishments but I also would have the students read articles on cyberbullying that are emotional and include stories on how students have felt after being cyberbullied, so they know how serious it is.

Blog Journal #2

I think teachers and students feel as if they should use technology in the classroom because of how popular and familiar technology appears to be for basically everyone nowadays. I think teachers particularly feel like if they are granted with the resources to include technology in their classrooms, they should take advantage of it. It can be a very quick and effective way of teaching and engaging students.

I have a lot of respect for the ISTE standards and think they work well to ensure that learning and technology is correlated in a positive and effective way in education. I think I am very familiar and experienced in the standard that is Digital Citizen. Since the very beginning of my use of technology i've been consistent with being safe and respectful on the internet. I know how to avoid illegal websites and know that once something is on the internet, it will always be on the internet.
I think as of now the Knowledge Constructor is a little out of my skill set because I am not familiar with a huge variety of resources yet. In order to really construct knowledge and build something meaningful you need to combine a lot of resources and a lot of digital tools and there's still some things I will have to learn in that area.

I think the term "digital native" is entirely true and agree that is exists. A digital native is someone, (basically like me) who was born in a time where technology was arising, was very popular, and they've been familiar with technology from a very young age. I see a lot of differences between digital natives and digital immigrants. Digital natives seem to be quicker at almost all things technology, as well as using a new piece of technology. I think digital natives are really quick to remember times when they didn't have to rely so much on technology and oftentimes get frustrated. That's what I see from people like my grandparents and even my parents. If I were to become a teacher, I think it'd be inevitable that half of the time my students would be coming up having to help me with a piece of technology I was confused about.

About Me

Hi everyone and welcome to my blog! I'm an arising senior at THE Florida State University pursuing a degree in psychology with a minor in education. When i'm not spending time working on my EME class assignments, I'm at the gym, going to the beach, or hanging out with friends. I hope to spend this hot summer traveling to cool places and making memories. I'm from a small beach town and it's cool to grow up and be able to see different parts of the world!

My prior experience of technology of course starts with my slight social media addiction, but I have more credibility than that. I have taken two technology classes here at FSU as well as courses in high school. I am pretty familiar with word, excel, powerpoint, and the basic computer programs.

I hope to learn a lot of information about new technology platforms in this class and how to use technology in a way that can better me when teaching. I feel like i've only ever used technology for personal reasons and I want to see how it can be used to enhance learning experiences.
